As the year draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on the past 12 months and make plans for the year ahead. For those of us in cybersecurity, the question is clear: what did we do to strengthen our security posture this year, and how can we do even better next year?

Hopefully, you can celebrate a year free from incidents. Yet even in the absence of breaches, this is the perfect time to reflect and improve. After all, the best time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining, not when it’s raining.

Why Zero Trust should be your resolution

Adopting a Zero Trust strategy as your New Year’s resolution is a smart and impactful way to enhance your organization’s security. And I believe you know exactly where to start.

Think about it: whether it’s losing weight, getting fit, or quitting smoking, we often know what we need to do. Eat healthier, exercise more, and drink less alcohol. The challenge isn’t understanding what needs to be done, it’s committing to the process. The same applies to Zero Trust.

You likely already have the tools: firewalls, endpoint protection software, identity and access management solutions, and more. But are they set up and used with a Zero Trust mindset? If not, it’s like owning a treadmill that’s gathering dust in the corner: it has potential, but it’s not delivering the results.

Getting help makes the difference

One of the best ways to achieve your New Year’s resolutions is to seek help. A gym membership, a personal trainer, or even a workout buddy can provide the guidance, motivation, and accountability you need to stay on track.

The same principle applies to implementing Zero Trust. While it’s not inherently difficult to do, it does require effort, focus, and consistency, just like any other meaningful resolution. With the right partners, you can navigate challenges, stay focused, and see measurable progress. Whether it’s identifying gaps in your current setup or finetuning your tools for a Zero Trust approach, expert guidance ensures you’re doing the right thing and that you’re doing them right.
